Why I chose the civil war in yemen
When the project was assigned I had no idea what to write about, I had never taken it upon myself to keep up with international news. Later that night as I hectically searched through dozens of potential topics, I came across an article titled "Yemen civil war: The facts about the world's 'forgotten war'" by Joe Sommerland. The phrase "forgotten war" piqued my interest. As I educated myself on the topic, I began to wonder why I had never heard of the conflict in Yemen on the News or on the front page of a magazine. As I learned about the living conditions of the residents of Yemen, I realized just how lucky I am that I did not live in a war-torn country like Yemen. I finally decided to write about the Yemeni civil war because I believed that the civil war in Yemen was too noteworthy to be dubbed "forgotten", and even though I had decided on a topic I still didn't know exactly what I was going to write about. In order to develop a feasible question I looked through more articles, and I noticed that a majority of the articles had been centered around children and their struggle with malnutrition. I then decided I would write my essay on the affects of the Yemeni civil war on children. I made this decision because I felt that the experiences of the children of Yemen should be shared so that we may appreciate our lives more, and to bring attention to the severity of the conflict in Yemen and the need for peace.

My research process
Before researching, I hypothesized that the fighting would leave hundreds of children orphaned, injuries sustained from being caught up in the crossfire would leave children dead or maimed, and that first hand experience with war as a child would cause psychological conditions such as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I anticipated these points to be valid factors in my essay due to prior knowledge from researching other wars such as world wars I & II. However, to my surprise, I did not expect the epidemic of undernourishment among children, and I did not expect the country to be on the brink of famine and depending on aid organizations. I also expected that the war had been going on for a little more than a year. However, upon researching further I was surprised to find out that the war had been going on for more than three years. I was also surprised to find out the
Difficulties I faced while conducting my research included thinking of a reasonable solution for my conclusion paragraph. While conducting my research I learned that negotiations with UN mediation had already taken place, but went no where in terms of finding a solution to the war. This caused me to believe that negotiations and peace talks would not be a substantial in ending the war. In addition to this, I personally do not believe that increasing the amount of fire-power would help, but bring more unnecessary casualties instead. Therefore instead of including a solution to the war, I provided a conjured a possible solution that would at least benefit the residents of Yemen, especially the children.
Previously, negotiations between the Houthi rebels and the Yemeni government have all ended unsuccessfully. However, new developments in attempt to end the war to end the stalemate are in the makes. The Trump administration has suggested that it will increase the U.S. weapons support to the Saudi Arabia-led coalition to defeat the Houthi-Saleh forces, push back against Iran’s influence in Yemen, and restore Hadi’s government to power. Nevertheless, While many agree the war must end, many argue this will only be achievable through a political solution.
